We are pleased to announce the general availability of Red Hat’s Migration Toolkit for Applications (MTA) 7.1.
If you are not familiar with this tool, know that this tool is designed to help you replatform or refactor your existing applications to run on Red Hat OpenShift or Red Hat Application Foundations. With containerization-readiness, source-code analysis, and project management capabilities this tool can help your organization benefit from faster, safer legacy application modernization.
This new release is focused on improving the overall user experience and performance of the tool while introducing new features that address needs coming from modernization and migration field practitioners.
On top of that, the analysis engine that powers MTA has been fine tuned to considerably increase accuracy, flexibility and performance.
The 5 new features
Below we detail the 5 new features that this 7.1 version release includes.
.NET support for analysis (Developer Preview)
The analysis engine now supports analyzing .NET workloads. This first iteration of the feature will only be available on the CLI, including a foundational set of rules that cover the .NET framework to .NET migration path.
Automatic language and technology discovery
Language and technology stack of applications in the inventory are now discovered automatically by MTA without the need of running an analysis. This allows a more natural flow in which the first step would be to understand the language and technology stack of an application, and based on that, potentially have it aligned with an existing archetype to then run the analysis for the most suitable migration target based on that information. Figure 1 depicts the language and technology stack details in the application inventory page,
Application Insights (Tech Preview)
Insights introduces a new concept that highlights where certain technologies are being used in applications, providing precise information down to the line of source code and complement tags to give you a better understanding of an application’s technology stack. In this release, Insights are available in static reports generated by the CLI, with integration with the User Interface coming in subsequent releases. See Figure 2.
Task management
The UI in MTA now includes precise information about what is queued for execution by the task manager that handles task execution like analysis or language and technology discovery. Users are now allowed to preempt tasks to prioritize according to their needs at every moment. Figure 3 shows the task manger.
Gradle support (Developer Preview)
Java applications that use Gradle as their build and dependency management system are now supported by the analysis engine.
