Everyone can contribute to Red Hat Enterprise Linux now

CentOS Stream completely changed the rules of the game: everyone in the world can now use and contribute to the development version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. You no longer have to wait for a beta, or even the general availability version, if you want to try the latest bits. Red Hat didn't stop with the latest development packages and modules—source code of CentOS Stream is now available and easily browsable. You can now clone a CentOS Stream package locally, such as the Linux kernel, change it, and propose a pull request. The product maintainers then evaluate whether it makes sense to include your change in Red Hat Enterprise Linux. In this session, we’ll walk you through the contribution workflow for a complete understanding of the process, tooling, gotchas, and places to find help. We’ll quickly introduce CentOS Stream (though we recommend attending our other session to know all the details) and then, with a live demo, we'll show you how to contribute to the ecosystem.

BPMaaS at BBVA: How we use synchronous service orchestration to automate global banking operations

BBVA, a global financial services company, has built a managed self-service application development platform. Based on key technologies from Red Hat, including Red Hat OpenShift and Red Hat Process Automation Manager, the "Ether" platform has enabled rapid, localized delivery of new banking applications. Despite the success of the platform, BBVA’s business is constantly changing with new demands. This year, new business requirements included the ability to develop “one-click processes,” which require a minimal footprint runtime and the ability to scale out in a granular way. To meet this need, BBVA is using new automation capabilities under development in the Kogito open source project, and slated for delivery in Process Automation Manager. With Process Automation Manager, BBVA is building synchronous processes that orchestrate service calls and provide a result in real time, aiming to take automation to the next level. In this session, we'll share what we've done, the lessons learned, and the resulting benefits gained.

10 design tips for microservices developers

At the intersection of science, art, patterns, and methods, Design 4 Developers (Design4Developers.io) gives you practices and patterns for creating better microservices that are simpler to test, write, and deploy. Developers spend a great deal of time writing software for consumption by humans, but don’t necessarily consider humans in the process. In this session, we'll avoid the depths of any particular technology stack and instead focus on human-centered technology needs. These needs are universal to all of us as humans and transcend any technical choice. Being aware of these needs will ultimately make you a better developer no matter what kind of development you do.

Project Shipwright: The future of OpenShift builds

Kubernetes changed the unit of delivery for software developers from compiled binaries and scripts to container images. Assembling a container image is not a simple task, requiring deep knowledge of new tools and technologies. Red Hat OpenShift 3 greatly simplified this task with the build API and source to image, allowing developers to build container images directly from code. Much has changed since Red Hat OpenShift 3.0, including the proliferation of container-based image building tools. In this session, we'll introduce Project Shipwright, a framework for building container images on Kubernetes and the future of OpenShift builds. We'll cover the origins of Shipwright, the objectives of the project, and see how Shipwright can build container images using new tools like cloud-native buildpacks. Leave this session understanding the basics of Shipwright and how to run Shipwright builds on your OpenShift cluster.

Be as reactive as Quarkus: Joyful live coding with changing requirements

Quarkus makes it easy and enjoyable to build applications. In this session, we'll put this to the test with a complete application written live according to constantly changing product specifications. We'll show you how to start from a traditional blocking application, turn it into a reactive application from end to end, add observability features, and effortlessly deploy it to Kubernetes—all the while showing how Quarkus holds your hand from start to finish to make it a joy.

With the advent of cloud computing, and moreover in recent times, distributed development is gradually becoming the de facto project delivery model. Easy ChatOps-based release automation with Tekton, ArgoCD, and GitHub Actions

How easy is your release process? In this session, we'll explore a release automation process that will make releasing code simple, transparent, and automated. Using GitHub Actions in combination with Tekton and ArgoCD, we created an infrastructure-as-code-based process to branch, tag, build, and deploy code in a reproducible manner right next to the codebase. We’ll highlight the GitHub Actions CI/CD platform and Red Hat integration to deploy applications to Red Hat OpenShift available at the GitHub Marketplace. Join us for this exploration of a ChatOps process that could be used to send your release automation into hyperspeed.

Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform's web console already includes an award-winning developer interface that is known for helping simplify application development on Kubernetes. In this session, we'll showcase a collection of console customization features recently made available for OpenShift Container Platform. Set your team up for development success as you learn how to: Accelerate onboarding of new users by providing guided tutorials via Quick Starts. Include your team's Helm Chart repository to make packaged solutions easier to share. Enable Operators and other important service dependencies (logging, metrics, data, and more). Dual write strategies for microservices

There has been a massive adoption of large-scale, distributed systems following the advent of microservices architecture. Despite the popularity of this architecture, the practical question of how to coordinate writes to multiple systems of record remains. Answering this question typically involves an explanation of dual writes, distributed transactions, modern alternative techniques, possible failure scenarios, and the drawbacks of each. In this session, we'll not go "down the rabbit hole" of discussing transaction internals. Instead, we'll sum up the main, higher-level approaches to avoiding distributed transactions and coordinating dual writes that we have seen working in practice.

Mutiny on the JVM: Taming complexity in the heart of Reactive Java

Reactive Programming has fascinated (and confounded) developers since Microsoft’s Cloud Programmability Team released the first version of Reactive Extensions for .NET. RxJava enables Netflix to deliver at a massive scale, is a fixture in Android development, and is frequently used in combination with RxJS for web development. Reactive toolkits, like Eclipse Vert.x and Lightbend’s Akka, have powered distributed, high-volume applications from the edge to the cloud. Spring’s Reactor project renamed many RxJava constructs, but did little for ease of use or flattening the substantial learning curve. Mutiny to the rescue. SmallRye Mutiny is a reactive library that distills Reactive Programming into 2 simple concepts: multi and uni. In this session, we'll live-code a Quarkus microservice with both Java 8 Reactive Programming and the SmallRye Mutiny library to demonstrate the simplicity, elegance, and ease of use of SmallRye Mutiny.

Easing your transition—CentOS Linux to CentOS Stream or Red Hat Enterprise Linux

In December 2020, Red Hat announced its intent to shift focus from CentOS Linux to CentOS Stream in support of the changing needs of the Linux community and partner ecosystem. In this session, we’ll dig into the use cases for moving from CentOS Linux to CentOS Stream compared to the use cases for moving from CentOS to Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Hear the details of several new, low-cost and no-cost programs made available in the first half of 2021 to support CentOS Linux users’ transition from CentOS Linux. We'll also touch on additional programs that are yet to become available in 2021. Each of these programs are designed to make it easier to adopt and use Red Hat Enterprise Linux for both your development or production activities.

The way to a developer’s heart is filled with images of wine and cheese

Image recognition involves identifying images and categorizing them in one of several predefined distinct classes. Image recognition software and apps can define what’s depicted in a picture and distinguish one object from another. Use cases for image recognition range from brand monitoring to industrial IT. In this session, we’ll explore key aspects of image recognition and build a neural network to recognize images and actual physical items of everything you might find at a great wine and cheese party. We’ll demonstrate the use of IBM Watson Studio to build and train a machine-learning model from a series of images of wine bottles, corks, and cheeses. Come out and discover how easy and fun it can be to build your own image recognition system. After this session, we’ll give you a link to the GitHub repo where you can try it yourself.

Bee Travel: A microservices Caribbean coding adventure
