Build and run an image mode for RHEL based container with Podman Desktop

This lesson will walk you through a simple Red Hat SSO extension installation on Podman Desktop. After adding the Red Hat SSO extension, log-in to your SSO account and access the Red Hat Registry ( catalog.redhat.com ) to access the image mode for RHEL image.

Overview: Build and run an image mode for RHEL based container with Podman Desktop

Image mode for Red Hat® Enterprise Linux® (RHEL) is a new deployment method that uses a container-native approach to build, deploy and manage the operating system as a bootc container.

Users building applications and containers in Podman Desktop can leverage the Red Hat plugins to quickly convert bootable containers into bootable cloud images or bare metal installers.

Users can leverage image mode to encapsulate runtimes, drivers, dependencies, and applications, and bridge gaps between the operation teams and the application development cycle.

In this learning exercise, you will:

  • Learn how to create a bootable container file from Podman Desktop.
  • Use the Red Hat SSO extension to register for a Red Hat developer subscription and access the Red Hat registry to get the image mode for RHEL.
  • Build, deploy, and run an OCI-compliant container file based on the image mode for RHEL using Podman Desktop.
