Red Hat today announced the general availability of Red Hat Software Collections 1.2, delivering the latest, stable versions of essential development tools, dynamic languages, open source databases, and web servers all on a separate lifecycle from Red Hat Enterprise Linux. The third installment of Red Hat Software Collections now includes vital open developer tools, such as GCC 4.9, Maven and Git, and, for the first time, makes the Eclipse IDE available on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7. In addition, Red Hat is offering Dockerfiles for many of the most popular software collections, aiding in the rapid creation and deployment of container-based applications.
Delivered on a separate lifecycle from Red Hat Enterprise Linux with a more frequent release cadence, Red Hat Software Collections (RHSCL) helps accelerate the development and deployment of modern applications. New additions to Red Hat Software Collections include:
- Red Hat Developer Toolset 3 as a software collection, bridging development agility and production stability with the latest stable versions of essential open development tools, including the Eclipse IDE 4.4 (Luna) (now available on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7), GCC 4.9, ltrace 0.7.91 and a number of other enhancements.
- DevAssistant 0.9.1, a tool for setting up development environments and publishing code.
- Maven 3.0, a build automation tool for Java projects that describes how software is built and the associated dependencies.
- Git 1.9.4, now separate from Red Hat Developer Toolset in its own collection to allow developers to access and install Git standalone from Red Hat Developer Toolset.
- Nginx 1.6, a fully supported web server and proxy server.
- Dockerfiles for many of the most popular software collections, helping developers to rapidly build and deploy containerized applications. Available for both RHEL 6 and 7, there are even a few that combine Apache httpd and your favorite scripting language RHSCL.
- RHSCL still includes recent stable versions of:
- Dynamic languages including Ruby with Rails, Python, PHP, Perl, and Node.js.
- Open source databases including MongoDB, MariaDB, MySQL and PostgreSQL.
- Web servers including Apache httpd.
As with all versions of Red Hat Software Collections, the languages, databases and tools featured in Red Hat Software Collections 1.2 can be used to build and deploy applications into production with confidence, as these components are supported by Red Hat for three years. Additionally, Red Hat Software Collections can be used to develop applications across Red Hat Enterprise Linux and OpenShift, Red Hat’s award-winning Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) offering, providing customers with extensive flexibility and choice for development and deployment.
Red Hat Software Collections 1.2 is available now for use with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 to customers and partners that have select active Red Hat Enterprise Linux subscriptions. All RHEL Developer Subscriptions include them.
