Get started with OpenShift Streams for Apache Kafka

Red Hat OpenShift Streams for Apache Kafka is a managed cloud service for architects and developers working on event-driven applications. It provides hosted and managed, high-availability Kafka clusters on-demand, so you can focus on developing your applications while Red Hat takes care of the infrastructure.  In this learning path you’ll sign up for a free Red Hat account, provision a managed Kafka instance, and connect to it using service account credentials via SSL.

To connect your applications or services to an OpenShift Streams for Apache Kafka instance, you need to create a service account:

  1. Select Application Services from the menu on the console.redhat.com landing page.
  2. On the Application Services landing page, select Service Accounts. You will be taken to the empty screen shown in Figure 12.
The Service Accounts screen is blank until you create an account.

3. Click Create service account to set up the service account. Enter a unique service account name and an optional description, and click Create.

4. Copy the generated client ID and client secret to a secure location. These are the credentials that you’ll use to connect to this Kafka instance.

After saving the generated credentials, select the confirmation check box and close the Credentials window.
