Red Hat Certification: for developers too!

Red Hat’s certification program provides validation of IT professionals’ skills and knowledge using our subscription products. Red Hat’s certifications carry credibility in the market because they are all earned by taking one or more hands-on, practical exams that last multiple hours. Like most programs offered by technology vendors, our most familiar certifications are those for system administrators.

What is less known is that Red Hat offers certifications for developers too!

Red Hat’s product portfolio goes beyond infrastructure and includes developer tools like JBoss Fuse, BRMS (Business Rules Management System), Data Virtualization, and Data Grid. These are tools used by developers to build and integrate applications more efficiently and effectively. We focus on developers when it comes to the certifications we offer in support of these products. Let’s not forget Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application Platform, for which we offer certifications for both developers and system administrators.

Containerizing SQL DB changes with Flyway, Kubernetes, and OpenShift

In DevOps projects, you are sometimes haunted by the practices inherited from the monolithic world. In a previous project, we were checking how to simply apply SQL updates and changes to a relational database management system (RDBMS) database in an OpenShift Cluster.

Micro database schema evolution patterns are perfectly described by Edson Yanaga in his brilliant free book: Migrating to Microservice Databases: From Relational Monolith to Distributed Data.  A video presentation of these patterns is also available on youtube.

In this blog post series we will show a simple approach to implement the described patterns in your Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) pipelines on OpenShift. The series is split in two parts:

  • This post shows how to handle SQL update automation using Flyway, Dockerfiles, and Kubernetes on OpenShift.
  • A future post will showcase application migration patterns, including database migration stages using OpenShift Jenkins2 pipelines.

Beta Testing in the Ever-Changing World of Automation

Beta testing is fundamentally all about the testing of a product performed by real users in a real environment. There are many tags we use to refer to the testing of similar characteristics, such as User Acceptance Testing (UAT), Customer Acceptance Testing (CAT), Customer Validation, and Field Testing (more popular in Europe). Whichever tag we use for these testing cases, the basic components are more or less the same. To discover and fix potential issues, this involves the user and front-end user interface (UI) testing, as well as the user experience (UX) related testing. This always happens in the iteration of the software development lifecycle (SDLC) where the idea has transformed into design and has passed the development phases, while the unit and integration testing has already been completed.

JBoss Data Virtualization on OpenShift: Integrating a Remote SQL Server Database

This example shows how on OpenShift to use a custom database driver to connect to an external database, through a Virtual Database (aka VDB). For this example, we will use a Microsoft SQL Server database (believe it or not, running on a Linux container), and the latest SQL Server JDBC driver.

SCTP Stream Schedulers and User Message Interleaving

As some may have noticed already, a new request for comments (RFC) regarding the Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP), RFC8260, has been published recently. This RFC defines two major changes for the SCTP protocol, originally defined in RFC4960:

1) Stream schedulers, which control which stream gets served next when sending a data chunk over the wire.
2) I-Data chunk, which extends DATA to overcome some of its limitations.

This blog post will go over the two changes, pointing out the benefits of using the stream schedulers, and especially when using them together with the new I-Data chunks.

Enabling SAML-based SSO with Remote EJB through Picketlink

Lets suppose that you have a remote Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) application where the EJB client is a service pack (SP) application in a Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) architecture. You would like your remote EJB to be authenticated using same assertion which was used for SP.

Before proceeding with this tutorial, you should have a basic understanding of EJB and Picketlink.
